Mette-Sofie D. Ambeck, MSc in IT, MA, mDD
Danish designer, artists' book maker, researcher and lecturer. Twice a graduate of Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, London (BA (Hons) Graphic Design, 1999 and MA in Communication Design, 2000). Since 2000 I have worked freelance including graphic design commissions, exhibitions, artists' book book fairs, personal projects and lecturing.
Between 2006-2008 I have completed a Master of Science in Information Technology in Digital Design and Communication at the IT-University in Copenhagen, focusing on User-centered design (completing courses in subjects such as: Concept Development, Usability, Target Group Analysis, Interaction Design and more) I concluded this course by writing a thesis called: 'A Comparative Exploration of the Experience of Continuous Reading for Pleasure in Both Traditional and Electronic Books'. Where I investigated the possibilities and potentials of books in digital formats, conducting interviews, video recordings and eye-tracking experiments on 9 subjects.
The artists' books I make are self-published, using hand-cut illustrations and typography. They experiment with formats, from traditional binding to more sculptural approaches. Sequence, narrative and the unexpected inspire me, and light, shade and texture also play an important role in my work. I constantly try to develop my skills and knowledge which the above is a statement of.
I actively exhibit my artists' book work through group exhibitions and at Artist's Book Fairs internationally, one notable example being the invitation to take part in the 1st Seoul International Book Arts Fair in South Korea in June 2004. My work is also represented in large international collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate Collection and The British Library, London, UK and Queensland State Library, Australia, Smith College, USA and many more. See CV for further details. CV-05.2009
I am always interested to discuss work, new commissions or lecturing opportunities. So don't be shy, contact me on: msambeck@hotmail.com and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
In 2008 examples of my work was published in two books: 'Fully Booked: Cover Art and Design for Books' (June 2008), by Die Gestalten Verlag, Berlin Germany. 'Bookcraft: Techniques for Binding, Folding, and Decorating to Create Books and More' by Heather Weston. "A Quarto book" Quarto Publishing plc, London, UK. More recently in May 2009 I also had work published in: 'Spark. Inspirational Graphic Design', by Page One Publishing, Singapore and Maomao Publications, Barcelona, Spain.
-and in 2007 I had a solo exhibition in the Library at School of Art, Media and Design, UWE, Bristol, UK titled: 'Mette Ambeck - 1996-2006: 10 years of books, cutting and holes' www.bookarts.uwe.ac.uk/mambeck.htm
In May/June 2007 my work was also selected as part of an invitation-only competition by the New York based design magazine 'PRINT' as being amongst the best in Europe.
